The Open Society Foundations work to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. Founded by philanthropist George Soros, the Foundations support individuals and organizations across the globe fighting for freedom of expression, transparency, accountable government, and for societies that promote justice and equality. Our approach focuses on those who face discrimination purely for who they are and others who are pushed to the margins of mainstream society. The Foundations view art as a social act essential to civic discourse and the vitality of open societies.
The Soros Arts Fellowship is a global initiative of the Open Society Foundations to support innovative mid-career artists advancing social change around the world. Designed with a clear awareness of the challenges faced by artists and cultural producers making socially engaged work, the fellowship provides artists with the resources to develop a large-scale project on their own terms in their own local contexts. Over time, the Soros Arts Fellowship aims to build a community of global allies while also strengthening the field of socially engaged art.
